Cervical Radiculopathy

Overview of Cervical Radiculopathy

overview

Cervical radiculopathy occurs when one of the nerves exiting the cervical spine is not functioning normally. This can occur for a number of reasons. Manifestations of the nerve root dysfunction include pain, weakness, tingling, and numbness.
Conditions which cause cervical radiculopathy include cervical spondylosis. Here, bone spurs narrow the neuro foramina where the nerve exits the spine. Spinal stenosis can also lead to cervical radiculopathy. Herniated discs can produce radiculopathy either by mechanical compression of the nerve or by chemical irritation of the nerve.

Causes of Cervical Radiculopathy

causes

Narrowing of the neuro foramina occurs with cervical spondylosis. Herniated cervical discs also compress or irritate the nerve roots. Tumors of the nerve roots or tumors of the spinal canal can lead to cervical radiculopathy.

Signs and Symptoms of Cervical Radiculopathy

signs and symptoms

The symptoms of cervical radiculopathy include dysfunction of the nerve. This can include weakness and numbness. Tingling may occur in the distribution of the nerve. Occasionally, the root may be affected far enough out of the foramina so as to interfere with the sympathetic nerve function. This can lead to changes in color and temperature of portions of the arm.
The symptoms of cervical radiculopathy are often aggravated by motions of the neck like extension and rotation.
