Astigmatism

Overview of Astigmatism

overview

The cornea, or transparent covering of the front of the eye, is uneven in people with astigmatism. This causes the light which enters the eye to be bent unevenly. When the light then passes through the lens of the eye, it cannot be completely focused on the back of the eye or retina. This results in blurry vision. Astigmatism can run in families. It often occurs with myopia or hyperopia.

Causes of Astigmatism

causes

Slight buckling of the cornea usually occurs at birth. This results in an uneven curvature of the eyes.
This type of abnormality can progressively worsen with advancing age.
Injuries to the eye or infection which might lead to a corneal ulcer may also produce an uneven curvature to the cornea. These may both produce forms of astigmatism.

Signs and Symptoms of Astigmatism
