The cause of this disorder is the death of some of the fat cells. They may become encapsulated, forming a tender mass in the breast. Excisional biopsy may be necessary to exclude breast cancer.

Signs and Symptoms of Acute Fat Necrosis Of The Breast

Bruising, tenderness, and swelling of the breast are common. A tender lump may develop that varies in size. In women who have undergone a lumpectomy and radiation therapy, similar changes may occur, several months to several years following the treatment.
