Wilm's tumor is a malignant tumor of the kidney. It occurs primarily in childhood. Over 90% of the time only one kidney is affected. These are mixed tumors, having more than one type of cell involved. It usually affects children under age 7, with a peak incidence between ages 3 and 4. Rarely, the disorder occurs in adults.

Signs and Symptoms of Wilms' Tumor

The symptoms caused by Wilm's tumor include an enlarged or swollen abdomen. A large, firm, smooth tumor can be felt easily within the abdominal wall. Wilm's tumors are often associated with elevated blood pressure. There may be blood in the urine or the urine may appear cloudy. Frequently children complain of recurrent abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. Fever and weight loss are seen.
