Whiplash is an injury to the neck. It is caused when the neck is whipped backward forcefully, usually in an accident. Involved are the muscles, tendons, disks and nerves in the neck.
Causes of Whiplash
Whiplash is due to trauma, usually from contact sports or motor-vehicle accidents. Most often, there is a sudden acceleration and deceleration of the head and neck.
Signs and Symptoms of Whiplash
Whiplash typically produces pain or stiffness in the front and back of the neck. The symptoms may appear almost immediately following an injury, or may develop over several hours or days. Dizziness, headache, nausea and vomiting are also often seen in those suffering from whiplash injuries.
