Vitiligo is the loss of pigmentation in patches of the skin. It can affect persons of any race or ethnic group, and often occurs on the skin on the back of the hands, face and armpits. It occurs most frequently in late childhood (9 to 12 years) to mid-adulthood.

Causes of Vitiligo

The underlying cause of Vitiligo is probably due to autoimmune disease. The melanocytes which are the pigment-producing cells die resulting in no pigment production.

Signs and Symptoms of Vitiligo

Vitiligo produces macules. These are small areas of different skin color. Vitiligo may also produce patches which are flat, white and can’t be felt with fingers. These patches frequently expand to form very large, irregularly-shaped areas without pigmentation. They usually on both sides of the body in approximately the same place. the patches range in size from several millimeters to several centimeters in diameter. Typically, the patches of depigmented skin are painless and do not itch. This disorder is also associated with premature graying of the hair.
