Post-menopausal Vaginitis

Overview of Post-menopausal Vaginitis

overview

As the estrogen levels fall after menopause, the vaginal tissue can become thinner and more fragile. The tissue can easily crack or be abraded, especially with the trauma of sexual intercourse. These damaged areas of the vagina are also prone to become infected.

Causes of Post-menopausal Vaginitis

causes

After menopause, decreased estrogen leaves the vaginal tissue thinner and more fragile. It is also more friable, where minor trauma results in bleeding. Sores or tears in the vaginal tissue can easily develop. Recurrent vaginal infections are more prone to occur due to damage of the tissue as well as changes of the chemical environment of the vagina.
