Bruxism, or tooth grinding, is the habit of grinding teeth, often done while asleep, but grinding or tapping teeth during the day is also common. Continual tooth-grinding may damage the teeth, the gums and other supporting bones in the mouth.
Causes of Tooth Grinding
Tooth grinding can be caused by anxiety. It may reflect an unconscious attempt to correct a faulty bite.
Signs and Symptoms of Tooth Grinding
Bruxism produces frequent contraction of muscles on either side of the face. Annoying tooth-grinding noises at night are made and they made be loud enough to awaken others. Dental examination can reveal damage to the teeth, the gums and other supporting bones. Headaches, particularly ones that start in the temporal or fronto-temporal area can occur.
