Inflammation of a vein associated with the development of a clot within the vein is termed thrombophlebitis. This condition occurs most commonly in the legs. When it involves veins on the surface of the extremity, it is termed superficial thrombophlebitis. Superficial thrombophlebitis seldom results in clots that break loose and flow in the bloodstream, as does deep-vein thrombosis. Superficial thrombophlebitis occurs primarily in adults and is more common in women.
Causes of Thrombophlebitis, Superficial
Superficial thrombophlebitis is due to increased fibrin and clotting of red blood cells in a vein. This can result from trauma to the vein's lining. Injection or intravenous infusion or compounds that damage or irritate the vein can produce thrombophlebitis. Pooling of blood, that may occur after prolonged bed rest or paralysis, may produce both superficial and deep vein thrombosis.
Signs and Symptoms of Thrombophlebitis, Superficial
Pain, redness and tenderness over a superficial vein. The vein may feel hard, like a cord. Occasionally, fever may occur.
