Sprains And Strains

Overview of Sprains And Strains

overview

A strain is a stretched or torn muscle. A sprain is a stretched or torn ligament. Although any joint may be involved, sprains are most common in the ankles, knees or fingers. Sprained joints can function with discomfort.

Causes of Sprains And Strains

causes

Strains are most often associated with overuse injuries. Sprains occur most often secondary to trauma (fall, twisting injury or automobile accident). The ankle is injured most often because of its anatomical weakness, its exposed position and the stress it sustains in athletic and recreational activities. It is often difficult to differentiate sprains from strains.

Signs and Symptoms of Sprains And Strains

signs and symptoms

Strains and sprains produce pain and tenderness in the area of injury. Swelling of the affected joint or muscles may occur. This may be immediate, or may develop over several hours or days. Bruising of the area also occurs. Both of these types of injuries leads to restriction of movement of that joint or muscle.
