Sores, Pressure

Overview of Sores, Pressure

overview

Pressure sores are skin ulcerations, usually in an area of pressure over a bony prominence. They are not contagious or cancerous. They occur most often on the skin over pressure points in the lower back, buttocks, elbows, knees, shoulders, heels, ankles and other areas with bony prominences. They can affect all ages, but are most likely to occur in the elderly, and bedridden.

Causes of Sores, Pressure

causes

Pressure sores are due to the constant pressure on the skin, especially over bony areas. Constant and unrelieved pressure reduces the blood supply, resulting in death in the tissue layers. Pressure sores most often develops in persons who cannot move because of chronic illness or disability that confines them to bed. They are also seen in paralytics. Here, not only may pressure be prolonged, but the lack of sensation fails to notify them when the tissue is being damaged.

Signs and Symptoms of Sores, Pressure

signs and symptoms

Pressure sores produce areas of skin that are red and shiny. This skin eventually breaks down due to continued damage and forms blisters and ulcers. The ulcers may gradually enlarge or become secondarily infected. The underlying bone may become exposed and infected as well.
