More than 90% of skin cancers occur on areas that are chronically exposed to the sun. Basal cell cancer is the most common form of skin cancer, accounting for about three-quarters of all skin cancers. This form of skin cancer generally does not spread to distant areas, although it can directly invade other tissues. Fair-skinned people are at the greatest risk of developing this disorder. It usually affects adults over age 40.

Basal cell cancers arise in areas of skin damaged by sun or ultraviolet rays.

Signs and Symptoms of Skin Cancer, Basal Cell

The most common form of basal cell cancer forms a small skin lesion or bump that is pearly or skin colored. It occurs most commonly on areas of skin frequently exposed to the sun. In addition to forming small bumps, some basal cell cancers may produce a flat lesion that is flesh colored or slightly brown. After several months, the lesion may ulcerate. It may continue to slowly enlarge and the ulcer may never completely heal. Basal cell cancers usually are not painful and dot not itch.
