Sjogren's syndrome is the second most common autoimmune disorder. It occurs mainly in women, with an average age of 50. It may occur by itself, or may occur in combination with other disorders. These include such diseases as Rheumatoid arthritis, Scleroderma, Systemic lupus erythematosus, and dermatomyositis/polymyositis. Sj?gren's syndrome often involves the exocrine (mucus secreting) glands of many organs. It may occur only in the eye, or may involve many organs, including the respiratory tract, the kidney, mouth and the genital tract.
Causes of Sjogren's Syndrome
Sjogren's disease probably represents an autoimmune disorder. The underlying cause for the disorder is not known.
Signs and Symptoms of Sjogren's Syndrome
Sjogren's syndrome can produce dryness of the eyes that can cause a foreign body sensation or a gritty feeling in the eyes. The eyes may become red, burn and itch. There may be a discharge from the eyes and the sensation of a "film" across the visual field may occur. Dryness of the mouth can cause difficulty in swallowing and talking. Dry mouth can also lead to abnormal taste, mouth ulcers, dental cavities and bad breath. Dryness of the nose can lead to decreased smell. In women, dryness of the vagina that can cause painful intercourse. Dryness of the upper respiratory tract that can cause nose-bleeds, hoarseness, chronic nonproductive cough, ear infection, and other respiratory infections. Sjogren's disease can cause parotid gland enlargement (sometimes referred to as "chip-monk facies"). At times people will develop joint pain and swelling. Fatigue, mild fever and muscle pain can occur.
