Sebaceous cysts are a dome-shaped, benign cysts that occur just underneath the skin. They are filled with semisolid material such as keratin, sebum and skin debris. They are found on the trunk, face, neck and scalp. They most common in adolescents and adults, but can affect all ages.

Sebaceous glands produce an oily substance that helps The cysts enlarge as more material accumulates within it. Enlargement is also stimulated by hormones or injuries. Infection of the cysts can lead to rapid increase in size and in severity of symptoms.

Signs and Symptoms of Sebaceous Cyst

Sebaceous cysts form a smooth, round or dome-shaped, lump just underneath the skin. The overlying skin appears normal. However, it might appear thin or stretched, if the sebaceous cyst has become quite large. Sometimes, the cyst may become secondarily infected. When infection occurs, the skin appears red and hot, it is tender and painful, and fever may be present.
