Tumors of the salivary glands are relatively rare. Of the three salivary glands, the parotid gland and the submandibular gland are the most likely to be affected. The majority of tumors that develop in these glands are benign, non-cancerous. These slow growing tumors may take years to develop. Occasionally, a cancerous tumor may develop. It tends to grow more rapidly and the symptoms progress faster.

Signs and Symptoms of Salivary Gland Tumor

The main symptom that is produced by salivary duct tumors is swelling. A soft, painful swelling or firm mass above the angle on either side or in the floor of the mouth is usually seen. Occasionally, there may be pain, especially if the tumor blocks the flow of the salivary gland. Moreover, it the gland becomes blocked, an infection may occur. This can lead to tenderness, pain and increased swelling over the gland. Fever and chills can occur. Pus can drain into the mouth producing a bitter taste. Swollen lymph nodes produce tender lumps in the neck.
