Premature Labor

Overview of Premature Labor

overview

Premature labor is defined at labor that begins before the 37th week of pregnancy.

Causes of Premature Labor

causes

About 50% of women suffering from premature labor have no identifiable cause. Premature rupture of the membranes (the water breaks) can produce preterm labor. Illness of the mother, such as toxemia, high blood pressure or diabetes are all known causes of premature labor. An abnormal shape or size of the uterus or a weak cervix can lead to premature labor. Multiple pregnancy has a higher risk of preterm labor. Vaginal infections and urinary tract infections may trigger preterm labor. Excessive amounts of amniotic fluid or abnormalities of the placenta, such as placenta previa, may cause preterm labor.

Signs and Symptoms of Premature Labor

signs and symptoms

Premature or Preterm labor may produce intermittent back pain. Contractions of the uterus are felt in the abdomen. The contractions may be painless. Passage of mucus, blood or amniotic fluid may occur from the vagina.
