Pityriasis alba is a benign disorder of the skin. It is varcharacterized by temporarily loss of pigmentation in the skin, usually on the cheeks and arms. It is most common in children but may appear in adults up to ages 20 to 30.

The cause of this disorder is unknown. It may have a genetic basis.

Signs and Symptoms of Pityriasis Alba

Pityriasis alba produces skin lesions that are small white patches with vague borders. The skin involved in these patches feels smooth. The patches are most apparent in summer because the lesions do not tan while the surrounding skin does. There may be anywhere from 1 to a dozen patches at a time. They may itch, but they are not painful.
