A pilonidal cyst is small, hair-containing skin sac located at the base of the spine. The cyst looks like a small dimple like opening, with a few hairs protruding. Pilonidal cysts are prone to infection. They are uncommon in black people and more common in men. They usually begin in young adulthood (ages 18 to 40).

A pilonidal cyst or sinus is probably a minor developmental abnormality. Periodic obstruction of this cyst or sinus can lead to the accumulation of bacteria.

Signs and Symptoms of Pilonidal Cyst

Pilonidal cysts often will not produce any symptoms. When they become infected, they produce pain, redness and swelling of the area involved. Fever and chills may occur. Pus may drain from the cavity.
