The adrenal glands sit on top of the kidneys. They are responsible for producing a number of very important hormones. Adrenaline and noradrenaline are produced by the medulla, or core, of the adrenal gland. Pheochromocytomas are tumors that typically develop in the core of the adrenal gland and produce excessive quantities of these hormones. These tumors are usually benign. There frequently is a family history of similar tumors. It occurs in adults of both sexes, usually between ages 30 and 50.
Causes of Pheochromocytoma
The hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine are produced by the core of each adrenal gland. These hormones interact with the blood vessels, the heart and the gastrointestinal tract. They lead to increased force and increased rate of heart contractions. They produce elevations of the blood pressure. These hormones tend to cause blood to be shunted to vital organs. Increased sweating and flushing are caused by the interactions of these hormones with the sweat glands and blood vessels. The cause of the tumor is unknown.
Signs and Symptoms of Pheochromocytoma
High blood pressure is the key symptom of this disorder. Pheochromocytoma also produces excessively rapid heartbeat following exercise, emotional upset or exposure to cold. Tremor, nervousness, and the feelings of impending doom may occur. Excessive sweating and flushing develops. Episodes of severe headache may develop. There can be nausea, vomiting and weight loss.
