Periodontitis

Overview of Periodontitis

overview

Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums. If this disorder is not treated, it may lead to the development of periodontitis, formerly known as pyorrhea. In periodontitis, an increasing layer of plaque forms in pockets between the teeth and the gum. Bacteria may develop secondary infections in these areas. This chronic inflammation and infection may lead to loss of the supporting structures of the teeth.

Causes of Periodontitis

causes

The underlying cause of gingivitis and periodontitis is poor dental hygiene. Mild forms of these disorders are very common. In periodontitis, plaque, or tartar, collects between the teeth and the gum. The swollen gums lead to enlargement of the space between the teeth and the gums. Additional plaque is deposited in these areas. The periodontal ligaments and the alveolar bone (tooth sockets) become eroded. Secondary infection may developing in these areas accelerating the process and producing acute bacterial infections.

Signs and Symptoms of Periodontitis

signs and symptoms

Periodontitis produces red, swollen gums. They gradually become recessed where they attach to the teeth. Secondary bacterial infections can lead to oozing from around the teeth. An unpleasant taste in the mouth and bad breath often occurs. The gums may easily bleed. The teeth may become loose or fall out. Hot, cold and sweet foods may produce pain in the affected teeth. If an abscess occurs, it will lead to increased swelling and redness around a particular tooth. A collection of pus will develop. Fever and tender, swollen lymph nodes in the neck may develop.
