Ovarian Cyst

Overview of Ovarian Cyst

overview

Ovarian cysts are formed by a benign, cystic (saclike) tumor on the ovary. The sac contains fluid or semisolid material. These sacs are normally small, but they may grow large enough to make a woman appear pregnant. The largest ovarian tumors are usually benign. Over many years (10 to 20 years) the tumor may behave like cancer. These are named low-malignant potential ovarian tumors or borderline ovarian tumors.

Causes of Ovarian Cyst

causes

Although the exact cause of ovarian cysts are not clearly known. They are certainly influenced by abnormalities of female hormone production and secretion, and endometriosis.

Signs and Symptoms of Ovarian Cyst

signs and symptoms

Frequently, ovarian cysts have no symptoms. When they do become symptomatic, there may be mild pelvic pain, pain in the lower back, and discomfort with sexual intercourse. Abnormal menstruation may occur, with changes in menstrual flow, changes in the length of menstrual periods and changes in the intervals between periods. Excessive hair growth, deep voice and weight gain can sometimes develop.
Occasionally, ovarian tumors will become necrotic, with portions of the tumor dying. This can lead to rupture of the tumor into the abdominal cavity. Peritonitis may then develop, with generalized abdominal symptoms. These include generalized abdominal pain, swelling of the abdomen and rigidity of the abdominal wall. There might be pallor, rapid heart rate and generalized weakness.
