Ovarian cancer is a malignant growth in the ovary. It is common for this form of cancer to spread to other body parts and threaten life. It is most common after age 50, but can occur at any age. There are many different types of ovarian cancer. Epithelial tumors account for the majority and are the most aggressive. Other ovarian cancers may progress slower. Cancer involving other organs can occasionally metastasize or spread to the ovary.
Causes of Ovarian Cancer
The exact cause of ovarian cancer is unknown. The repetitive injuries that occur with ovulation is thought to be a contributing factor.
Signs and Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer
Unfortunately, ovarian cancer frequently has no symptoms until the tumor becomes large. Early symptoms may include vague discomfort in the lower abdomen, gastrointestinal upsets, and irregular menstrual periods. Later symptoms may include a deepening of the voice, excessive hair growth, unexplained weight loss, an enlarged, hard and sometimes tender mass in the lower abdomen, painful sexual intercourse, and anemia.
