A temporary condition of the leg at the knee. It is varcharacterized by swelling, tenderness and pain. The tibial tubercle, a prominence just below the kneecap is involved along with a large thigh muscle connecting the bone of the upper leg (femur) to the large bone in the lower leg (tibia). It can affect both knees. It is rare after age 16 and affects adolescents of both sexes.
Causes of Osgood-schlatter Disease
Osgood-Schlatter disease is due to stress or injury of the tibial tubercle (which is still developing during adolescence) and causes flare-up. Further stress or injury interferes with development, causing inflammation.
Signs and Symptoms of Osgood-schlatter Disease
Symptoms of Osgood-Schlatter disease include a slightly swollen, warm and tender bump just below the knee. Frequently, there is increased pain with activity, especially straightening the leg against force, as in stair-climbing, jumping or weight-lifting.
