Nevi are skin lesions that often begin to grow in childhood. Occasionally, there are present at birth. They have usually made there appearance by early adult life, if they are going to occur. Freckles and common moles are the most common type. Dysplastic nevi are a type that may continue to appear even after age 35 Unfortunately, they are more prone to degenerate into melanomas, which is a malignant tumor of the cells that produce pigment. Dysplastic nevus syndrome is defined as the presence of multiple dysplastic nevi and melanoma in 2 or more first-degree family members.

Dysplastic nevi may be caused by a genetic abnormality or they may appear sporadically. It is uncertain whether ultraviolet rays play a role, since they can be found in sun-protected areas.

Signs and Symptoms of Nevi, Dysplastic

Dysplastic nevi produce lesions with irregular borders. They are ill-defined and may be flat or slightly elevated. Usually, they measure 5-15 mm in diameter, which is larger than the common mole. They vary in color from tan to dark brown on a pink back-ground. Dysplastic nevi can appear anywhere on the body, but most frequently they are found on the back, chest, buttocks, breast and scalp. they are found both in sun-exposed as well as sun-protected areas. As many as 100 lesions may be found.
