Onchomycosis is a fungal infection involving the nails. The fungus can live within the keratin that compose the nails and digest it. These infections sometimes will last years, even a lifetime. Once the nails become involved, they undergo a variety of changes and may even be destroyed.
Causes of Nails, Ringworm Infection Of
Fungi infecting and living in the nail is the cause. Sometimes fungal infections of the feet or infections around the nail can serve as risk factors for developing nail fungal infections. The presence of diabetes and having hands in water or moist for long periods of time are risk factors for developing fungal infection of the nails. Fungal infections of the fingernails usually only occur if there is some underlying damage to the nail.
Signs and Symptoms of Nails, Ringworm Infection Of
Fungal infections of the nails produce thickening of the nails, either of the hand or foot. They lose their luster or shine. The edges may crumble and disintegrate. They nails may become loosened and detached or fall off entirely. An accumulation of debris is usually found underneath the edge of the nail.
