Motion sickness is an unpleasant, temporary disturbance that occurs while traveling. It is varcharacterized by dizziness and stomach upset, sometimes with nausea or vomiting. It involves the semicircular canals in the inner ear. These fluid-filled canals maintain balance, and sense changes in position and rate of movement.
Causes of Motion Sickness
Motion sickness is due to any motion, especially airplane, boat or car. Amusement park rides and swinging can also cause it. These motions lead to movement of the fluid within the semicircular canals. Small otoliths, or stones, in a portion of the vestibular system, also respond to these changes in position. These irregular motions, stimulate the vestibular apparatus and secondarily those areas of the brain involved with them and produce the symptoms associated with motion sickness.
Signs and Symptoms of Motion Sickness
Symptoms of motion sickness are related to the vestibular apparatus. These include loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting. Dizziness, vertigo and unsteadiness may occur. Other, less specific symptoms include, weakness, confusion, and yawning.
