Aseptic meningitis refers to an acute inflammatory disease involving the linings of the brain and spinal cord. This may occur from a viral illness. There are some other conditions, such as chemical meningitis, that can occur in response to certain toxins, drugs or chemicals that are released into the spinal fluid.
Causes of Meningitis, Aseptic
Aseptic meningitis may be due to viruses, such as polio virus; autoimmune response following various viral illnesses, such as measles; and fungal disease such as yeast. In addition, chemicals, dyes or toxins introduced into the spinal fluid can produce chemical meningitis. Some organism, such as Cysticercosis cysts, may die and rupture producing an acute inflammatory response from the contents of the cyst.
Signs and Symptoms of Meningitis, Aseptic
The symptoms of aseptic meningitis are essentially the same as that with bacterial meningitis. There is fever, although it may not be significant, especially with the chemical forms of meningitis. The neck is stiff and there is headache. Confusion, lethargy and nausea and vomiting may occur. Increased sensitivity to the light develops. Occasionally, the inflammatory or infectious state can lead to the development of hydrocephalus, or the collection of spinal fluid within the brain. This can lead to increasing headache, lethargy and coma. Gait disturbance, balance problems and forgetfulness may develop.
