Systemic lupus erythematosis is an inflammatory disease affecting the connective tissues. These are the tissues that hold things together or provides support for many organs. Consequently, many, if not all, or the body's organs may be involved. Over 90% of cases of this disorder occur in women between the ages of 30 and 50. However, the disease appears in both sexes and in all ages.
Causes of Lupus Erythematosus, Systemic
The cause of SLE is unknown, but lupus is probably an autoimmune disorder, where the body’s immune system malfunctions and attacks its own normal tissue.
Signs and Symptoms of Lupus Erythematosus, Systemic
SLE, or systemic lupus erythematosis, produce symptoms that fluctuate. They may flare up at one time and disappear at another. Typical symptoms associated with this disorder include fever, fatigue and rash. The rash often occurs on the face and appears to have a butterfly appearance. The skin rashes are often precipitated or aggravated by exposure to the sun. Ulcers in the mouth may develop. Pain, redness, swelling and tenderness develop in the joints. However, no significant deformity of the joints occur. Redness of the palms and hands may occur. Involvement of the heart and lungs may produce shortness of breath, chest pain and irregular heart beats. Lumps in the armpit, groin or neck may appear. Involvement of the brain can lead to mental changes, confusion and psychosis. Hair loss can occur
