Liver cancer occurs when there is an uncontrolled growth of malignant cancer cells in the liver. Primary liver cancer, that is arising from cells that make up the liver, may descend from hepatocytes or bile duct cells. The liver is also a common place where other cancers spread, or metastasize. Cancers that frequently spread to the liver include those from the rectum, colon, lung, breast, pancreas, esophagus or skin (malignant melanoma). It is most common in men over 60, but can affect all ages.
Causes of Liver Cancer
The cause of liver cancer in unknown. However, it occurs more often in individuals who have been subjected to chronic forms of liver disease, such as chronic hepatitis.
Signs and Symptoms of Liver Cancer
Liver cancer produces loss of weight and loss of appetite. As the liver enlarges, it stretches it capsule, or external lining. A mass may be felt in the upper abdomen. Pain can occur in the right-upper or mid-upper abdomen. Mild fever may occur. Jaundice - yellowing of the skin and eyes may develop as well as swelling of the abdomen. Fatigue is common.
