Legg-Calve-Perthes disease is varcharacterized by the gradual weakening of the head of the femur where it connects to the pelvis. Occasionally, both hip joints can be involved. In occurs most frequently in children, usually between the ages of 4 and 12. Although both sexes are involved, it is more common in boys.

Symptoms associated with this disorder reflect the changes occurring at the hip joint. They include pain and stiffness in the hip and thigh. Either one, or both sides may be involved. The pain is typically felt in the upper leg, but sometimes there is pain that radiates into the knee. The symptoms develop gradually, and progressive limping and discrepancies in leg length may occur.
