Laryngeal cancer occurs when there is an uncontrolled growth of malignant cells in the larynx and surrounding tissues. This disorder is seen more often in men than in women. It is most common between the ages of 55 and 65. Slightly over half of these disorders develop in the vocal cords, the remained occur from tissues just above or just below the vocal cords. When the malignancy develops on the vocal cords, it produces symptoms more rapidly, and diagnosis and treatment can be initiated faster. However, when other areas of the larynx are involved, the disease may progress prior to the development of symptoms.
Causes of Larynx Cancer
The etiology for the transformation that leads to cancer is not known. However, chronic exposure to smoke and to alcohol definitely increase the risk of developing this disorder.
Signs and Symptoms of Larynx Cancer
The hallmark of this disease, especially if it begins on the vocal cords, is hoarseness that does not disappear after resting the voice. There may be a feeling of a lump-in-the-throat. Painful or difficult swallowing can develop and there may be difficult or loud breathing and chronic cough. A hard lump may develop in the neck, which is frequently painless. This may be a bad sign of cancer spreading to the local lymph nodes. As the disease progresses, there may be weight loss
