A polyp of the colon, or large intestine, is a benign growth shaped like a grape on a stalk. It appears flat against the inner lining of the large intestine and can occur singly or in groups. Growths that are found that are greater than 1centimeter in diameter may become cancerous and should be treated.
Causes of Large Intestine Polyp
In general, the cause of polyps of the colon is unknown. Sometimes, however, these develop as parted of an inherited condition, called familial adenomatous polyposis. In this condition hundreds of polyps develop. It is due to an abnormal gene inherited in an autosomal dominant manner.
Signs and Symptoms of Large Intestine Polyp
Frequently, polyps of the colon will not produce any symptoms at all. Occasionally, bleeding from the rectum may or mucus discharge from the rectum will develop. There may be abdominal pain and cramps. Recurrent diarrhea may occur. Occasionally, a large polyp will protrude from the anus. If there is significant bleeding from the poly, signs of anemia may develop. These include fatigue, shortness of breath, exercise intolerance, rapid heart rate and pallor.
