Interstitial cystitis is varcharacterized by an inflammation of the bladder wall. The symptoms that occur are similar to that of cystitis, where a bacterial infections of the bladder is present. In cases of interstitial cystitis, urine cultures are negative for bacteria and antibiotics usually do not help. It affects women of all ages, but the average age of onset is 40. The impact of this disease can range from mild to severe.
Causes of Interstitial Cystitis
The cause of interstitial cystitis is unknown. Studies suggest that it is possibly initiated by bacterial infection, by an autoimmune process (misdirected immune response in which the body’s defenses become self-destructive) or by contact irritants. It is thought not to be an infectious disease.
Signs and Symptoms of Interstitial Cystitis
Interstitial cystitis produces pelvic and lower abdominal pain and pressure. There is painful, burning urination and a frequent urge to urinate. Sometimes this urge can occur up to 60 times a day. Following urination, there is the sensation of incomplete emptying of the bladder. Painful sexual intercourse, vaginal pain and rectal pain sometimes occurs.
