Urge incontinence is the lack of ability to control the bladder, once the urge to urinate occurs. This disorder may occur alone, or sometimes is seen with stress incontinence. The incidence of urge incontinence increases with age, and affects women more often than men.
Causes of Incontinence, Urge
The cause of urge incontinence is an overactive bladder muscle. This overactivity results in the bladder frequently contracting to empty. This occurs with bladder stones, bladder cancer or obstruction of the urinary tract. In addition, injury to the nerve supply to the bladder, in the brain or in the spinal cord, can produce a spastic neurogenic bladder. This type of bladder has the same type of urge incontinence symptoms.
Signs and Symptoms of Incontinence, Urge
Symptoms of urge incontinence involve the involuntary loss of urine after feeling a urge to urinate. The volume or urine passed varies.
