This is a psychological disorder defined by a person’s conviction that he or she has a serious or fatal disease. This conviction is not altered even with evidence to the contrary from thorough medical examinations and tests. They become quite informed and knowledgeable about illnesses, diagnoses and treatment. The person usually has many medical evaluations and numerous contacts with health care professionals.

The cause is uncertain, but may be due to other psychological disorders. The condition is more common in people who had a illness in childhood or were closely involved with a sick relative.

Signs and Symptoms of Hypochondriasis

Symptoms include anxiety and persistent reports of symptoms. A preoccupation with the possibility of heart disease or cancer is common. Although the symptoms may change, the person’s belief that a serious condition exists does not. Frequently reported symptoms include insomnia, sexual dysfunction and gastrointestinal discomfort, such as bloating, belching and cramps. Complaints may shift and change and be very specific or vague.
