An allergic skin disorder. It is varcharacterized by a rash with raised areas, redness and itching. It can occur anywhere, including the scalp, lips, palms and soles.
Causes of Hives
Causes include: release of histamines, sometimes for unknown reason, medications, insect bites, viral infections, autoimmune disease, dysproteinemias, exposure to cold, heat, water or sunlight, cancer, especially leukemia, exposure to animals, especially cats, eating eggs, fruits, nuts and shellfish, food dyes and preservatives (possibly) and infection (bacterial, viral, fungal).
Signs and Symptoms of Hives
Symptoms include itchy skin papules (small, raised bumps) with the following varcharacteristics: swollen, pink or red lesions called wheals ,clearly defined edges and flat tops, measure 1 cm to 5 cm in diameter, wheals join together quickly and form large, flat plaques (larger areas of raised, skin-colored lesions), and wheals and plaques change shape, resolve and reappear in minutes or hours. Rapid change is unique to hives.
