Hidradenitis Suppurativa

Overview of Hidradenitis Suppurativa

overview

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a disorder that affects the skin. It is varcharacterized by nodules that develop just underneath the skin. They most commonly occur in the armpit, but may also occur on the buttocks, groin or underneath the breasts. Both sexes may be affected, but this disorder is more common in women, especially those 13-16 years of age.

Causes of Hidradenitis Suppurativa

causes

This disorder is thought to be influenced by hormonal changes. These hormonal influences activate the apocrine glands under the arms. These activated glands enlarge. Blockage of the gland due to heat, sweat or incomplete gland development may occur. Once the glands no longer function normally, bacteria may invade them and lead to inflammation and abscess formation.

Signs and Symptoms of Hidradenitis Suppurativa

signs and symptoms

The nodules that develop from Hidradenitis suppurativa are usually firm and tender. They are generally from 1 to 3 cm in diameter. Larger nodules soften in the center and become painful, they feel like an overfilled inner tube. Intermittently, the nodules will break open and drain pus. The open nodules gradually heal, over two to four weeks. The severity of the disorder varies. There can be just a few lesions per year, or a constant succession of new lesions that form as old ones heal. Lesions often recur at the same place.
