Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus. It can involve the genitals, the rectum or the oral cavity. It is transmitted through vaginal or anal sex as well as oral sex. It can also be transferred from an infected mother to the infant during childbirth. It is often found together with other sexually transmitted diseases.
Causes of Herpes, Genital
Genital Herpes infections are due to the herpes type 2 virus (HSV-2). The herpes type 1 virus (HSV-1) which causes common cold sores and appear around the mouth, sometimes cause genital herpes. A sexual partner who has active herpes lesions, transfers the lesion, which are on the genitals, hands, lips or mouth (including type 1 virus). Once exposed to the virus, the incubation period is 2 to 20 days. The infection can be acquired without developing any acute symptoms. In these situations, the virus may periodically become reactivated and lead to outbreaks of genital herpes infection.
Signs and Symptoms of Herpes, Genital
Genital herpes infection usually produces pain and itching in the area that is affected. Within several days a rash begins to develop. The rash is composed of vesicles, or blisters. In women, the vesicles may be in the vaginal area, the external genitalia, the anus or the buttocks. In men, the rash develops on the penis, the scrotum, the buttocks or the anus. The blisters often form small ulcers that may ooze. the ulcers scab over and eventually heal. Urination and sexual intercourse is often painful during the stage where vesicles or ulcers are present. Tender lumps develop in the groin, representing swollen lymph glands. Fever and malaise may be present.
