Herpangina refers to an inflammation that involves the mouth and throat. It may be confused with canker sores, strep throat or herpes. Occurs more often in young children (1 to 10 years), than in adults.
Causes of Herpangina
Herpangina is a viral infection. It is caused by a coxsackievirus. It is spread from person to person, and usually begins to produce symptoms 2-7 days following exposure to the disease.
Signs and Symptoms of Herpangina
Herpangina produces fever, sudden sore, red throat and painful swallowing. There may be a general ill feeling, vomiting and abdominal pain. Tiny blisters, or vesicles, eventually form small ulcers in the mouth and throat.
