Heatstroke is the result of prolonged exposure to hot temperatures, limited fluid intake, or failure of temperature regulation mechanisms in the brain. It is more common in the elderly.
Causes of Heatstroke Or Heat Exhaustion
Heat exhaustion is caused by: insufficient water intake, insufficient salt intake, and a deficiency in the production of sweat. (Sweat evaporation is what helps to cool the body). Heat stroke is caused by: overexposure to extreme heat, breakdown in the body’s heat-regulating mechanisms, overheated to a dangerous degree (body temperature can reach 107° F).
Signs and Symptoms of Heatstroke Or Heat Exhaustion
Symptoms of heat exhaustion include: heat exhaustion, dizziness, fatigue, faintness and headache. The skin is pale and clammy, the pulse rapid and weak and breathing is fast and shallow,. There are diffuse cramps in the muscles. People complain of intense thirst. Heatstroke is often preceded by heat exhaustion. Heatstroke produces skin is hot, dry and flushed. There is no sweating and the body temperature is very high. There is a rapid heart beat, confusion, and possibly the loss of consciousness.
