Heartburn is known as acid indigestion or gastroesophageal reflux disease [GERD]. It is a symptom, not a disease. It occurs in about 10% of the population almost every week. In addition, the hormonal changes that occur in pregnancy, make it very common for pregnant women.
Causes of Heartburn During Pregnancy
Caused by a backflow of acid from the stomach into the esophagus. During late pregnancy, the enlarged womb presses on the stomach. Due to hormonal changes and increased pressure within the abdomen, stomach contents may enter the esophagus and cause irritation.
Signs and Symptoms of Heartburn During Pregnancy
Heartburn produces belching, slight regurgitation of stomach contents into the mouth, where it produces an acid taste. This type of regurgitation occurs especially when lying down or sleeping. Pain or discomfort may be felt in the chest, upper abdomen or neck. There may be difficult or painful swallowing. A bloated feeling or vomiting may occasionally occur.
