Heartburn During Pregnancy

Overview of Heartburn During Pregnancy

overview

Heartburn is known as acid indigestion or gastroesophageal reflux disease [GERD]. It is a symptom, not a disease. It occurs in about 10% of the population almost every week. In addition, the hormonal changes that occur in pregnancy, make it very common for pregnant women.

Causes of Heartburn During Pregnancy

causes

Caused by a backflow of acid from the stomach into the esophagus. During late pregnancy, the enlarged womb presses on the stomach. Due to hormonal changes and increased pressure within the abdomen, stomach contents may enter the esophagus and cause irritation.
