Tension headaches or muscle contraction headaches are very common. They most commonly produce pain diffusely over the head and the back of the neck. They may occur as an acute event, or may reoccur, sometimes daily. Tension headaches are considered chronic when they occur at least twice a week for several months.
Causes of Headache, Tension Or Vascular
Tension headaches can be caused by poor posture, neck strain, or working in tight and awkward positions. Strain on the muscles of the neck, face and jaw may produce this type of headache. Anxiety, stress and depression are leading contributors to this type of headache. Sleep disturbances can not only produce these types of headaches, but once they develop, the headaches can interfere with sleep. Excessive eating or drinking, eye strain, including sun glare, use of drugs or alcohol, low blood sugar, hormone changes during the menstrual cycle, and allergic reactions all can lead to the development of a tension headache.
Signs and Symptoms of Headache, Tension Or Vascular
Tension headaches produce dull pain and pressure. It is usually located diffusely over the head. It may feel like there is a band or vice around the head. The muscles at the back of the neck may be tense and tender. There are no neurological abnormalities produced by this type of headache. The chronic form of tension headache occurs The headaches can last for long periods and may make it difficult to sleep.
