Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Overview of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

overview

This type of diabetes occurs only in pregnant women and 2 to 3% of all pregnancies. There is an increase in the percentage some population groups, such as Native Americans, Mexican-Americans, Asians and East Indians.

Causes of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

causes

Gestational diabetes occurs when there is insufficient insulin production from the pancreas to keep blood glucose levels normal during pregnancy.

Signs and Symptoms of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

signs and symptoms

Symptoms of gestational diabetes vary. Frequently, there may be no clinical symptoms, with the only abnormality being an abnormal glucose level in the blood. Other signs include a fetus that is larger than normal for the stage of pregnancy. To confirm the diagnosis, a glucose test can be done. This is usually done during the 24th to 28th week of pregnancy for nondiabetic mothers. Earlier testing is often recommended for patients diagnosed with GDM in a previous pregnancy.
