A fungal infection of hair follicles of the skin. It may be superficial or deep and is contagious. It may resemble herpes infection and usually involves the skin on hands, arms, legs, face and scalp.

Fungal folliculitis usually results in the development of plaques. These are patches or flat areas of abnormal skin. They have clearly defined borders. Frequently, pustules may develop on these plaques. They are usually small,1 mm to 2 mm in diameter, and frequently appear in clusters.
