Fibrocystic disease is a common disorder of the female breast, varcharacterized by benign lumps and pain. It can affect females from puberty to 50. Approximately 20% of women have this disorder. The incidence decreases after menopause, unless estrogen-replacement therapy is used. Since it is so prevalent, it is no longer considered a disease. There is usually not a cause for concern.
Causes of Fibrocystic Breast Disease
Possibly related to estrogen and other hormones produced by the ovaries and to dietary fat intake.
Signs and Symptoms of Fibrocystic Breast Disease
Fibrocystic disease produce lumps that are usually in both breasts. Although solitary lumps may occur, multiple lumps are much more common. The lumps offer resistance when pressed with fingertips. The lumps may be tender, or there may be generalized breast pain, especially just before menstrual periods. The lumps often enlarge before menstrual periods and shrink afterward. The lumps vary in size, when lumps are relatively large and near the surface, they can be moved freely within the breast. Lumps deep within the breast may be indistinguishable from breast cancer.
