Fecal impaction is a severe form of acute constipation. It is varcharacterized by the inability to pass large fecal masses. This disorder is usually no serious. It may complicate other illnesses, especially those which lead to dehydration of gastrointestinal dysfunction. Large doses of narcotics can also produce this situation.
Causes of Fecal Impaction
Fecal impaction may be caused by rectal disorders that make normal bowel movements uncomfortable. These include such disorders as painful hemorrhoids, anal fissures and rectal or colon tumors. Diagnostic tests with barium that is swallowed for X-rays of the intestinal tract, can lead to fecal impaction. The loss of nerve supply to the colon or rectum, as with a spinal-cord injury, can produce severe slowing of the intestinal tract and fecal impaction. Insufficient fiber and inadequate quantities of liquid in the diet can also contribute to fecal impaction.
Signs and Symptoms of Fecal Impaction
Symptoms include the absence of normal bowel movements. A fullness in the rectum is felt, but there is an inability to pass stool. Occasionally, there is urinary incontinence or the lack of urinary control. A firm mass may be felt in the lower left abdomen. Fecal impaction often develops slowly without discomfort, but lower abdominal pain can develop. A thin, watery discharge from the rectum may occur. Nausea, vomiting, and the loss of appetite may occur.
