In the esophagus, which is the tube connecting the mouth to the stomach, a new growth of cells multiply in an uncontrolled fashion. Cancer that begins in the esophagus usually occurs in the lower third of the esophagus and may spread throughout the chest. It occurs predominantly in adults, usually over the age of 50. and more often in men.
Causes of Esophageal Cancer
The cause of esophageal cancer is unknown. Most esophagus cancers are primary, beginning in the tissue of the esophagus, rather than spreading from another focus of cancer. The disease is more common in people who chronically irritate the esophagus.
Signs and Symptoms of Esophageal Cancer
The symptoms associated with esophageal cancer include difficulties swallowing or painful swallowing. There may be episodes of regurgitation, some of which can lead to aspiration of some of the contents into the lungs with the development of pulmonary infections. Vomiting blood or mucus may occur. As the disease progresses, there may be unexplained weight loss.
