An acute inflammatory disorder involving the skin and mucous membranes. It is usually a benign disorder, but can be potentially severe. Stevens-Johnson syndrome or erythema multiforme major are the severe form of this disorder, while the less severe form is referred to as erythema multiforme minor.
Causes of Erythema Multiforme
The cause is unknown in 50% of cases. Other known causes are: viral infections, particularly the herpes simplex virus, bacterial infections, protozoan infections, collagen vascular disease, medications such as sulfonamides, penicillins, anticonvulsants, salicylates, barbiturates, drug reactions may not occur until 7-14 days after, malignancy, pregnancy, radiation therapy, and premenstrual hormone changes.
Signs and Symptoms of Erythema Multiforme
Symptoms of Erythema multiforme include a red rash, composed of spots that are usually symmetrical. The rash frequently appears as concentric rings, like a target with a bull's-eyes. The rash usually appears on palms, soles, other areas of arms and legs. It may spread to the face and the rest of the body. The rash is itchy and sometimes has a painful or burning sensation. The red rash may eventually transform itself into blisters. In the severe form of this disorder, hives or ulcers develop. Also, the severe forms of this disorder go on to involve the mucus membranes of the mouth, the gastrointestinal tract, the genital tract, the eyes and the throat. There is headache. Diarrhea is common due to inflammation of the intestinal tract.
