The epididymis is a long coiled tubular structure. It connects the testicle to the vas deferens, where the sperm eventually may be ejaculated through the ejaculatory duct. The mature sperm are stored in the epididymis. Inflammation of the epididymis may occur, commonly producing testicular pain and fever.
Causes of Epididymitis
Epididymitis is usually caused by a bacterial infection. It can begin as a urinary tract infection. Also, sexually transmitted diseases are possible causes. Disorders of the prostate, bladder and kidney can increase the risk of developing this disorder. Occasionally, blood borne infections can deposit their bacteria in the testicle or epididymis. Tuberculosis can involve the testicle and epididymis. These infections can also develop after infection or secondary to an injury of the scrotum.
Signs and Symptoms of Epididymitis
Symptoms associated with epididymitis most commonly develop over several hours. They include swelling, tenderness and redness on the side of the scrotum that involves the infected epididymis. There may be swelling of the testicle and it is painful. Occasionally both testicles are involved. In severe cases, fever and chills will develop. If the infection has arisen from a urinary tract infection, there may be painful or frequent urination. There may be a recent history of sexually transmitted diseases or some type of urethral discharge.
