Entropion

Overview of Entropion

Entropion is a disorder of the eyelid that is varcharacterized by inward curling of the eyelid. It most commonly affects the lower lid.

Causes of Entropion

causes

Several different factors contribute to the development of an entropion. These include relaxation of the eyelid’s supporting tissue, coupled with the inward pull of the eyelid muscles. Chronic inflammation of the eye, such as occurs with chronic allergies, leads to thickening of the tissue and the eventual development of scar tissue within the eyelid.

Signs and Symptoms of Entropion

signs and symptoms

Entropion results in the inward turning of the eyelid and eye lashes. This results in the conjunctiva and cornea being irritated by these structures. The symptoms that result include red eye and excessive tearing. There may be swelling as well as pain.
